Letters Going Home
Submitted by Ms Ellis on Wed, 2008-06-04 09:13.Several parents have been asking when you will find out about next year’s placements in advanced classes. The answer: letters are being mailed home by the end of this week. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at lellis@sd74.org.
I’d like to thank everyone for making this such a great first year here as a teacher at Rutledge Hall. It’s been a memorable year with lots of gratifying moments.
I wish all of the students and their families a summer filled with laughter, relaxation, good books, and fun. Be safe, rest up, and I’ll see you in the fall, ready for more teacher torture! Heh heh.

Another Contest Honor
Submitted by Ms Ellis on Mon, 2008-05-19 10:04.Back in the fall, the third, fourth, and fifth grade pullout students competed in Storyworks Magazine’s Create-a-Character contest. Each student created a character whom they hoped would be interesting enough to stand out among the more than 7,000 entries submitted from across the nation. The winning character was selected by well-known children’s author Pam Munoz Ryan, who has written novels such as Esperanza Rising and Becoming Naomi Leon. Ms. Ryan incorporated the winning character into a short story that was published in the April/May issue of Storyworks magazine. One of the fourth grade students was selected as a runner up in this prestigious competition. A huge congratulations to Emery P, and a good job to all of the students for their very creative characters!
Poetry Publishing Results Are In!
Submitted by Ms Ellis on Mon, 2008-05-12 07:59.The third, fourth, and fifth grade pullout students submitted poems to a competitive publishing opportunity through Creative Communications. Typically, a school that does very well with this anthology might see up to half of its submissions accepted, but the pullout students managed a most impressive feat: all of their poems were accepted! Congratulations to the creative kids of Room 41! Here are their winning poems. Enjoy!
THIRD GRADE
Soul Mate
By: Alexa
My soul mate would be a modest wolf of gray
A companion for night, a companion for day
An amazing animal with fuzzy warm fur
And when I am down he would be the cure
What gleaming light would shine in his eyes
I see in my life, he would be the surprise
Once he touches my heart with his warm, gentle paw
I couldn’t stand being apart; it would feel too raw
How I long for a soul mate just like him

Family Game Night
Submitted by Ms Ellis on Mon, 2008-04-21 08:17.
The Gifted Parents’ Network Pizza and Game Night was a big success. Over 60 people came to eat yummy pizza and play games such as Boggle, Set, Taboo, Batik, Attorney Power, and My Word. The competition and concentration were fierce at many of the game tables, but no one lost sight of the main priority: coming together to have fun.
A big thank you to the parent volunteers who helped to make the event happen: Jennifer Greene, Maggie Smith, Elaina Geraghty, Mary Silber, and Leslie Sherman.

Publishing Poetry
Submitted by Ms Ellis on Mon, 2008-04-07 07:48.Third, fourth, and fifth grade pullout students have been writing poems that have the potential to be published in a well-respected children’s poetry book. The students have been studying rhyme schemes such as AABB and ABCB and writing about topics that we have studied in class. The fifth grade poems revolve around Greek mythology, the fourth graders are writing about the environment and change, and the third grade poems are about human animals with animals. Read below for a sample of a few of these wonderful poetic creations.

Continental Math League Contest
Submitted by Ms Ellis on Mon, 2008-03-10 10:13.All of the pullout students will be taking the Continental Math League national math competition this April. The contest is comprised of 30 problems of increasing difficulty. High scoring students will be acknowledged with a certificate, and the top scorer at each grade level will receive a book of outstanding math contest questions compiled over the years. In preparation for the contest, the students have started taking practice tests based on previous years’ contest questions. Students can practice good test taking skills, but the group discussions about how to approach the problems help to develop problem solving strategies. How do you become a better reader? By reading. How do you become a better problem solver?
