Fifth Grade

Mrs. Brunner's News To Know

Report cards will be given out to the students on Friday, April 11th.

Please see that Reading Logs are signed by parents every day.  Each child should be reading at least 30 minutes a day.

Basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division should be studied every week.  We have a two minute timed test on basic facts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

Have a great weekend!

Physical Examinations

The state of Illinois has changed the requirements for physical examinations from fifth grade to sixth grade. Thus, currrent fourth grade students will not be required to submit evidence of an exam for enrollment. However, we do hope that parents and guardians will strive to promote the health of their students by having the recommended yearly physical examinations for their family. This visit with the physician not only ensures your child is receiving a regular health assessment, but gives you the opportunity to discuss relevant issues with your doctor.

More Strategies For Students With Attention Difficulties..............

These techniques I use in the classroom and can be adapted for use at home.

Discourage Frenetic Work Patterns

Students with Attention Problems often rush through their work.  I try to avoid statements such as "You can go out to recess as soon as your work is finished".  This kind of statement inadvertently encourages students to work too quickly and carelessly.

Use Behavor Modification and Self-Assessment

The use of behavior modification and self-assessment strategies can be helpful in increasing desired behavior problems such as impulsive blurting out in the class.  I identify the behavior to be changed (i.e,  raising hand, completing Math assignments, etc.)  Then I decided on a consequence.  The consequence for positive behaviors should be more rewarding to the student than failure to complete the positive behavior.  For example, if a child is allowed to stay up an extra 15 minutes in the evening, this behavior must be more rewarding than leavng his/her dirty clothes on the bedroom floor.  A student should also be encouraged to assess his own behavior and be given a reward for self-assessment.
