Hello Families,
The students have been hard at work this week. We have had so many fun things go on. We continue to dig deeper and deeper into our curriculum. In Reading we continue our journey. We have been reading and discussing many fascinating stories about families that migrated to the United States, as well as sharing stories about members of our own families that migrated to America. We also read a very interesting story about the Titanic.
In language Arts the students are learning about subjects and predicates. We are beginning to work on Narrative writing. The students will receive a recipe that includes all of the ingredients needed to “cook up” a great narrative story.
This week along with the spelling test, the students were tested on the definitions of each spelling word. The students are responsible for knowing how to spell the words in each unit; in addition they are required to know the definition. I’m sure we all agree, it is important for students to know the meaning of the words that they are spelling and how the words are used. In order to assess the students I will frequently test them on both the spelling and definition of the words in their unit. Furthermore, the children are required to turn in spelling sentences various weeks. This helps me to see that they are able to use their spelling words in the correct context. All of the students are doing extremely well and many achieved high scores on this weeks test.
We’ve are flying through unit 2 in math. Organizing numbers, data, graphing and multi-digit addition and subtraction appear to be no problem for the math students. They will be tested on Unit 2 at the end of next week. Please remember to sign each test and return it to me as soon as possible.
This week in technology we worked on our keyboarding skills. Room 25 teamed up with Mr. Werneske and worked on a program that is located on the internet. The program focuses on teaching students to type using all of their fingers rather than just the one many students tend to use. Students are using the home row of keys and a series of typing activities that will help them become more proficient typists.
