The Power of Nature

Hello Families!

Regardless of the shortened school week, we managed to get a lot accomplished! In Reading the students finished the story, “Volcanoes,” to conclude the unit, Nature’s Fury. The students seemed to really enjoy learning about nature’s unstoppable disasters. The nonfiction stories captivated them and fueled fantastic questions and discussions about the powerful acts of nature. The students will be taking a quiz on this unit on Monday. While there is no way to fully prepare for this assessment, the students could benefit from looking over the stories and reviewing the short quizzes that they have taken thus far.

During Intervention this week we began working on a mini research project correlated with the Nature’s Fury unit. The students each chose a natural disaster that they wanted to learn more about. There was a nice variety chosen from tornadoes to avalanches to hurricanes to tsunamis. The students had to find five facts about their chosen act of nature and put each fact in their own words. They then had to find a picture to match each fact that they found. Next week we will be inputting the facts and pictures into a computer program called Comic Life that will display the students’ work in a colorful and fun way!  We will then share them with the class so that everyone can learn more about the various acts of nature.

Hope you all have an enjoyable weekend!
