What's happening in Room 20?

We are so lucky that in this day in age technology can be used in the classroom. This week we have been utilizing our technology skills in Room #20 with our computers on wheels, also known as COWS, which we are fortunate enough to have in district. Kidspiration, which is designed for emerging readers and writers, helps students build upon and strengthen their reading and writing skills by organizing and explaining ideas visually. This past week we used Kidspiration in correlation with the idioms we have been learning about! We also went on funbrain.com, one of my most favorite interactive student websites and created our own silly madlib passages using English parts of speech. Your students had a blast!
Along with using technology in the classroom, this week, your 3rd graders focused on making connections with text. We learned about text-to-text connections, text-to-world connections, and text-to-text connections. We read Wemberly Worried by Kevin Henkes, Knuffle Bunny by Mo Willems, and then Chrysanthemum, also by Kevin Henkes. The 3rd graders have gotten great at making connections to the stories they are reading, and they are becoming excellent readers too! Â
In 4th grade, we continued our National Geographic Curriculum on "Habitats" and also created a new song, with synonyms that we came up with for the main lyrics entitled "If You're Blissful and You Know It," instead of "If You're Happy and You Know It". Â
The 5th graders started their National Geographic unit on "The Changing Earth" and also began discussing the 6-Traits of Writing. We learned about the Ideas trait and wrote about the memories behind special objects in our lives.
We are wrapping up our daily idiom discussions by creating an Idiom Dictionary. This is an in-class student project. Â
Enjoy this beautiful Fall weekend! Â
