Advanced Reading Classes

I work with the advanced reading class teachers at each of the three grade levels. It is a wonderful opportunity to further work with the students, as well as to team-teach with the teachers. At every grade, the students are reading books within a particular genre, both individually as well as with the whole class. We have also had visits from, or visited, both the Rutledge Hall librarian and the Lincolnwood librarians to further our studies of the books each genre has to offer.

The third graders have begun a study of folktales from around the world. As a class, they are focusing on Cinderella variants, tracking the similarities and differences and how geography (proximity) affects the number of similar elements among the stories.

The fourth graders are reading fantasy books. As a class, they are enjoying Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbitt. Individually, they are selecting titles such as The Secret of Platform Thirteen, Ella Enchanted, and the Rebecca Caudill nominated novel The Lightning Thief.

The fifth graders have been reading World War II historical fiction novels. As a class, the students are reading The Cay by Theodore Taylor. Popular titles for individual reading include The Devil’s Arithmetic, Under the Blood-Red Sun, The Diary of Anne Frank, and the Rebecca Caudill nominated title The Green Glass Sea.

The excitement levels are high in each of the classrooms, and certain titles are emerging as the “It” books of the genre. Ask your student which books she or he has been enjoying for the genre study.
