Poetry Publishing Results Are In!
Submitted by Ms Ellis on Mon, 2008-05-12 07:59.
The third, fourth, and fifth grade pullout students submitted poems to a competitive publishing opportunity through Creative Communications. Typically, a school that does very well with this anthology might see up to half of its submissions accepted, but the pullout students managed a most impressive feat: all of their poems were accepted! Congratulations to the creative kids of Room 41! Here are their winning poems. Enjoy!

Soul Mate
By: Alexa
My soul mate would be a modest wolf of gray
A companion for night, a companion for day
An amazing animal with fuzzy warm fur
And when I am down he would be the cure
What gleaming light would shine in his eyes
I see in my life, he would be the surprise
Once he touches my heart with his warm, gentle paw
I couldn’t stand being apart; it would feel too raw
How I long for a soul mate just like him
As I stare at the sky on my balcony rim
The Panda
By Alex
Fur so scrunchy
Leaves crunch munchy
In the big trees
Swatting out the bees
Fur black and white
Doesn’t like to fight
Eats bamboo
Lives in the zoo
Munches the leaves and
Scratches at fleas
His name is Pandabeary
Too bad he’s imaginary
In Outer Space
By Nick
One time I went to outer space
Where I joined a shooting star race
I touched 46 stars
And walked on Mars
I jumped on Saturn
And walked its cratered pattern
I encountered a falling asteroid
Which I barely managed to avoid!
If from the sun’s rays I did not flee
The sun’s rays would have burned me
When I neared a dark black hole
I was scared and shivery cold
Next I found the Milky Way
And saw a shiny solar ray
On the moon I saw a flag
And saw young moon kids playing tag
I met the aliens of planet Suskoot
Oh wait; did I bring my space suit?
The Farm Dog
By Emily
A dog that lives on a farm
Might want to do harm
But this dog is tame
Tame without being lame
If you make a growl
It really will not prowl
All it does is sit
Won’t hurt you the slightest bit
Sit by its side
Watch it with pride
Dogs usually make me want to flee
But this one’s okay with me
PAL
By Chaitanya
I have a dog; his name is Pal
The cool thing about him is he has a penpal!
When he was young
he got stung
Once we thought he had rabies
but other dog had babies
Pal is so nice and kind
He's so smart, he can play Mastermind!
One time, Pal read a book
Do you know how long it took?
He's so trained
sometimes I think he's a Great Dane
The good thing is he's a Golden Retriever
I'm so happy he's not a beaver
One time Pal took a trip
we all thought that he was sick
Do you know why I made this up?
I really want a pal that's a pup!
FOURTH GRADE
Everything Changes
By Emma
Night and day
April and May
A child in the wood
To adulthood
Animals enraged
Sadly trapped in a cage
Leaves on a tree
To the ground soon will be
A thought I had
That’s driving me mad
Everything changes eventually
But you will always be you and I’ll always be me
Lieutenant John Michaels
By Dan
For John Michaels, war is not what he expected
He thought he would become a hero and become respected
Now John is frightened and sad
The only thing to comfort him is his comrade
This comrade of his reminds him of his brother
Joking, playing catch, and facing troubles with one another
On the battlefield, they are brothers
Both ready to help themselves, ready to help others
One sad day John was upgraded to a higher rank
His friend was killed, but his bravery was to thank
John is now old and his name is remembered on a plaque
His bravery is now a message for all soldiers in Iraq
Emery’s Earthly Promise
By Emery
Taking care of the earth is the right thing to do
Everyone should take a part in helping, even you
The hot sun is melting the polar ice
Polar bears are now clinging for their life
Recycling can be a part of your day
Collect your newspapers, don’t throw them away
Glass, plastic, and aluminum can all be reused
If you can do these little things, we can stop the earth from being abused
Tell your friends and parents too
They can help, as well as you
Don’t forget to do your part
Keep the earth close to your heart
The Diminishing Umbrella of Shade
By Kate
Whack! Smack! Down falls a tree
As we ignore its silent plea
Just like everyone else on Earth
Trees have had souls and feelings since Birth
These beautiful creations are taken for granted
Some people say, “Oh, they can be replanted!”
Without trees life wouldn’t be the same
Cutting them down is such a shame
Above, I see great leaves of jade
As I sit here in the diminishing umbrella of shade
The Soccer Game
By Mario
The Blue team kicks the ball
Like a waterfall
Fifty feet tall
The ball, a drab shade of gray
Towards the goalie, by the way
Soaring fast, speeding away
The ball goes left, it’s going right
Right in the goal, without a fright
The goalie must have let it out of sight
The two teams are tied at this time
I see some gamblers betting a dime
If Blue doesn’t win, it will be a crime
Five minutes left to play
If they win, Red team will pay
The crowd’s arms lift, they move and sway
Ball meets net, net meets ball
We have our score once and for all
The Red team cries, and down they fall
I Am Stuck in a Box
By Faith
I am in a box, and I cannot get out.
Whatever shall
I do, as I
Sit here in this
Box. Maybe
I’ll just
Sit here
In this
Box until
I grow old
And wrinkled.
I’ll be fossilized
Just like
The dinosaurs.
Triceratops, T-rex,
Duck-billed platypus.
This box
And I, we are
Great friends.
But now
I am very
Old, and I
Can’t stay
Here forever,
So I break the top; I’m finally free.

Heracles’ Victory
By Miguel
Run, hide, and dodge it
Do not rest and sit
If you do, O Great Heracles
Down you will go to Hades
It roars and cries
In its cave it resides
The Hydra, strong and great
Has a center head and others eight
Attack the Hydra’s middle head
Or soon you will be stiff and dead
Do not let it bite thee
Or you will die, you will see
Well done, O Great Heracles
Now you have two glories
You have slain the beast
And were not injured in the least
But first, into its blood your shafts dip
Shoot someone, and in pain they will flip
Now even more powerful are thee
And all men before you, will flee
Athena and Medusa
by Val
Medusa sits as a bride to be
waiting for her groom, God of the sea
Athena watches from above
wondering what the foolish mortal is bragging of
The Goddess of Wisdom has officially stated
that Medusa is to be recreated
The mighty Goddess will turn her into a horrible creature
Athena knows that ought to teach her
This monster lives in a cave unknown
and anyone who passes will turn to stone
In the end slain by Perseus so brutally
To this day her head lies at the bottom of the sea
Cupid and Psyche
By Kayla
Psyche, a girl who could match the beauty
of Aphrodite whose son spread love as his duty
Into a castle Psyche was swept
for a long while there she was kept
Until her sisters gave her advice
Psyche was happy, her invisible host, quite nice
She came to Cupid’s room with a knife in her hand
just to see the betrayed Cupid fly to another land
Psyche wanted Cupid but first, she must ask
the goddess Aphrodite who gave her a challenging task
Poor Psyche must have been distraught
for the task surely assured she would never get whom she sought
Psyche was helped by Cupid who could not be seen
she was to get some beauty from the underworld queen
Psyche found the queen who gave her a box
when Psyche opened it she fell into a sleep stiller than the rocks
Lying there with her eyes closed in the sleep of the dead
Cupid put the sleep back in its box, and to Aphrodite Psyche was led
Zeus made Psyche immortal with a drink
So Cupid and Psyche could forever be linked
HADES’ DOMAIN
BY RAHEEL
Men, women, and children’s heads swirl
Right before they enter Hades’ world
A dark world of gloom is where he rules
And Cerberus guards the gates as he drools
Persephone pretends to smile as she sighs
She smiles as she speaks her lies
She lies about liking Hades’ domain
What she really wants is to be in the sun’s warm rays
Hades is the richest god
But still he is very odd
He would rather stay in the Underworld
Where secrets of death swirl and whirl
He is a terrifyingly dreadful one
For he kidnapped Persephone just for fun
He tries to be kind but he cannot
Because he truly has forgot
That jewels and gold are not what shows you care
Love is the thing that shows you are fair
So on he lives without love or pain
This is the world of HADES’ DOMAIN!!!
The Haunted Realm of Deep Below
By Ian
You see Hermes
And you know it’s time to go
He gently touches your eyes
And starts you on your journey
To the Haunted Realm of Deep Below
You shall face Rhadamanthus
Judge of the Dead
So wise in life
He was chosen to judge in death
In The Haunted Realm of Deep Below
He shall deal your punishment
Judged by how you lived
For if you were thieving, sinister
Join the condemned at the whips of the Erinyes
In The Haunted Realm of Deep Below
If you were kind, good
Dwell amongst the heroes
In the never-failing light of the Elysian Fields
Peace and happiness forevermore
Enjoy your stay in Hades
The Haunted Realm of Deep Below
Athena Versus Arachne
By Paulina
Don’t dare to compare yourself to a Goddess
Athena will make you not a human but less
Athena might have looked sweet
But only if you were on her good seat
Athena had an immortal natural gift
that was just too much for Arachne to lift
Arachne was overconfident
which is why Athena was sent
Athena was filled with rage
And put Arachne in an insect body cage
She didn’t know she would be transformed
Even though Athena had warned
To the human world
Arachne is now an outsider
As she forever dwells
On the earth as the weaving spider
