RH Intervention Room: New Groups! February 19, 2008

Now that winter benchmark scores have been evaluated decisions are being made in regards to who is ready to transition out of intervention groups and who is in need of services. A team at each grade level met to discuss results and how to best address the needs of out students.

Students who are showing growth that will lead them to future success will be transitioning out of the intervention room and back to their classrooms. This is great news! While I will miss seeing these students on a daily basis, it is time to see what they can accomplish without extra help. During this transition time I will continue to monitor their progress using Curriculum Based Measurement and charting their outcomes on AIMSWeb. With continued growth the student will no longer need to be monitored weekly. Students who do not show growth outside of the intervention room will need to be reevaluated. I wish all these students continued success! They have earned this opportunity by working hard and believing in themselves.

Those who continue in intervention services will continue to show slow and steady growth over time. Additional interventions will be considered. While these students are not exiting they are working at reaching their independent growth goals. Reading out loud should be focused on at home.

Newly identified students will be joining intervention groups. Again, entry into to the program is based on Winter Benchmark scores. Students who are not making expected growth in reading are going to receive services. For those new to the program the primary intervention program being used is called Soar to Success. This program focuses on comprehension, strategic reading, and sequencing. Fluency is assessed weekly and students are made aware of their strengths and weaknesses in the area of reading. Goals are set for improvement. I look forward to meeting many new students in the next week.

For those that will be continuing services, and for those who are new, please read below to find out what we will be reading in class:

Third graders will be reading The Paper Crane by Molly Bang. They are very excited to start this story since it involves origami.

Fourth graders will begin reading JoJo’s Flying Side Kick by Brian Pinkney. This is a story about a young girl who does Tae Kwon Do.

Fifth graders will complete their unit on the book Sunken Treasure. We have been learning a lot about how ships were sunk, how to salvage a ship, and how to restore and preserve the artifacts. Students have become experts in this field as they compare old war ships to luxury ships like the Titanic. We’ve had great conversations in small group as we apply the strategy of compare and contrast. As soon as we are done we will begin reading The Little Painter of Sabana Grande by Patricia Maloney Markun.
