The 3rd grade Davis Digest

Dear Families,

Welcome to the 2010-2011 school year! I am Miss Davis, your child's 3rd grade teacher and I am so excited for a terrific year in Room 7. This school year we will be exploring the Daily 5 in reading, multiplication in mathematics, the history of the Native Americans in social studies, and the scientific method in science.  These are just a few of the many areas in school that we will be visiting  in 3rd grade.

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that today is the last full day of school.  We have had an unbelievable school year filled with wonderful memories. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for contributing to our class and making this year special.  Every field trip, classroom party, and activity we had in Room 7 was excellent and I know the students really enjoyed themselves in 3rd grade.

I am looking forward to a fantastic summer with some of your children in summer school, and running into others around Lincolnwood.  Hopefully, many of you will stop by Room 7 during the 2010-2011 school year and say hello.

Have a wonderful summer!
Miss Davis

Dear Families,

Friday, May 28th is our annual 3rd grade picnic. We are so excited for this day of fun at Proesel Park and are keeping our fingers crossed that the weather will be fantastic! I want to thank each and every one of you for filling out the permission slip and for getting a lunch order from your child.  If your child is NOT ordering a hot dog, please make sure that he/she brings a sack lunch to school on Friday.  There will be NO other lunch available.  In addition, we are looking for chaperones to accompany us to the park. Since the park is rather large, we are looking for parents to volunteer their time on Friday to monitor the students as they enjoy their playtime.

I would also like to send out a few reminders regarding equipment that students can and cannot bring to the park on Friday:
-ABSOLUTELY no metal or wooden bats, motorized vehicles, or anything         with wheels (roller blades, scooters, etc.)
-Please leave all technological devices at home. (cell phone, ipod)
-Wear GYM SHOES and dress appropriately for the weather.
-Sunscreen; we will be outside all day long!!!

If you have any other questions or concerns, please contact me through the district website.
Have a great week and stay cool!

The 3rd grade Davis Digest

Dear Families,

With only a few weeks left of school before summer vacation, there sure seems to be a lot of things happening here in room 7. I wanted to give you an overview of the next couple of weeks so that both the children and the parents are in the loop.

First and foremost, we will be wrapping up our Astronomy unit on Thursday, May 27th with an online assessment. The students will be given a review sheet and will play a review game, but the actual assessment will be given in class, with computers.  Next Friday, the 28th of May, we have our 3rd grade picnic. Please fill out the blue permission slip and ask your child if they would prefer a hot dog or a sack lunch from home on that day.  We also have our Wendella Boat Cruise, scheduled for Tuesday, June 1st. That is always an exciting field trip that the boys and girls LOVE! Please make sure to fill out that permission slip as well and  send $15.00 with your child, too.  After that comes Field Day, Move-up day, and then we will be saying our goodbyes.

There are so many fun things to look forward to in the next couple of weeks, but it is very important for the children to remain focused and well behaved. We will continue to review the expectations in the classroom, so that we can all enjoy the remainder of the school year together.

Have a wonderful week!

Dear Families,

We have launched our Astronomy unit, and we are loving every minute of it! Today we will wrap up our studies on the Sun, and we will be moving towards learning about the seasons.  This is always an interesting area to study for the children, and is somewhat difficult, too. With that in mind, I have decided to have the students produce a "Reasons for the Seasons" book, in lieu of a seasons quiz. The students will be given the requirements on Wednesday, and will have one week to complete the book. I will show the students a model of what the finished product should look like, and I will be providing them the paper as well. The students will use their "seasons notes" to complete the book and will work on this independently. This is an AT HOME PROJECT, and will count for one quiz grade under Science.  I will also remind the students to bring their science materials home with them EVERY night until the project is due; Wednesday, May 19th.

If you have any questions or concerns about this project, please contact me via email through the school website.

Have a great week and stay dry!
