In art class, fifth grade students have begun tessellations. We began by looking at M.C. Escher's work with tessellations and discussing the similarities and differences between them and the tessellations that the students had done in math class. Our work on the shape we were going to fit together was then done and finally the drawings of the actual tessellations. Most students are now working on adding details and color to their piece.

This week in art class most fifth grade classes were putting the finishing touches on their masks. We will continue this process next week, but we are also learning the skill of shading.  For some this is difficult at first, but like any skill, it becomes easier with practice.  Later this semester we will put this skill to use.

Fourth graders are finishing up their fantasy dragons.  They must create a dragon, draw it large on the page, show its size by its surroundings, and make the dragon stand out on the page by either using complementary colors or contrast.

This week in fifth grade art classes the students have been working on their masks. The plans have been made and now they are being put into action. Pencils are used to draw the design on the mask and tempera paint, glitter, feathers, and yarn are being used to finish it. Students may also bring in items from home to add to the design. Since one layer has to dry completely before another is applied it will take a few weeks to complete the project.
