Moving on to Expired Energy

The students wrote before-and-after poems. They also wrote poems upon listening to the Allman Brothers' song "Jessica."

There were some great poetic moments in their work. J.C. described a used pencil as "pointless." F.O. made up a word and labeled a street "potholeless." S.S. called his poem "Expired Energy." C.R. said a stolen car was "gone for good" (even though that's a bad thing). D.H. punned about her island life: "With coconut and straw in my palm."

Here is J.A.'s amazing poem "Moving on" ...

Report Cards

Dear Parents,

Report cards are scheduled to be sent home with your child on Wed., April 14. Please note that a dash appears on the report card for a skill not assessed during that marking period. Kindly sign the yellow slip and return it to me in its envelope. Keep the report card itself. If you have any questions about report cards, please contact me. In general, this class did very well-- working hard, doing high quality work, and respecting others. Bravo!

Conferences and More

Thanks to all the parents who came to Portfolio Night or scheduled conferences on March 22 and 24. I enjoyed meeting you and discussing your children's progress. The students got a big kick out of sharing their portfolios with their parents. They have studied very hard this year and were proud to show off their fine work.

Have a wonderful spring break. The students' homework is to read, explore and have fun!

Push and Pull

In science class, we are studying force and motion. The students are enjoying building cars and doing experiments with them. They have considered what happens to their vehicle's velocity when its load is increased or when it is pulled by more weight (in the form of metal washers). We have discussed gravity, air pressure, friction, net force, and other concepts.

African American Biography Project

These past few weeks, the students worked on their African American biography projects. The students researched the lives of many interesting persons, including George Washington Carver, Louis Armstrong, Malcolm X, Wilma Rudolph, and Oprah Winfrey. Their projects included detailed essays and colorful posterboards. It was a job well done.
