Intervention Update

This month the 5th grade teachers began spending three of the five intervention time slots (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) working on vocabulary enrichment. During these half hour periods, the teachers are focusing on teaching the students the definitions of their spelling words through various methods of instruction.
Since vocabulary development is an essential component of the curriculum, I am allotting time during intervention to it as well. On Mondays and Fridays the students and I have been spending a portion of our time together learning vocabulary words from the orange spelling book. We are spending two weeks, or 4 class periods, learning and mastering one unit at a time.

The Power of Nature

Hello Families!
Regardless of the shortened school week, we managed to get a lot accomplished! In Reading the students finished the story, “Volcanoes,” to conclude the unit, Nature’s Fury. The students seemed to really enjoy learning about nature’s unstoppable disasters. The nonfiction stories captivated them and fueled fantastic questions and discussions about the powerful acts of nature. The students will be taking a quiz on this unit on Monday. While there is no way to fully prepare for this assessment, the students could benefit from looking over the stories and reviewing the short quizzes that they have taken thus far.

With a few weeks under our belts, the students and I are growing accustomed to our new schedules along with the expectations of 5th grade! It is essential that the students complete their homework every night and are prepared for class the following day. All students should be practicing their multiplication facts, as timed tests are a part of the weekly routine in Math. Their Math teacher, Mrs. Doyle, would like to see a steady increase in their scores, which many of the students have demonstrated in the first few weeks of school. Keep up the good work!

Getting into the Swing of Things!
Submitted by Ms Weiner on Fri, 2008-09-12 14:30.Hello Parents!
We’ve had another productive week at school filled with lots of learning and fun! This week in Reading the students took their first quiz, which tested their comprehension of the story, “Earthquake Terror.” Some of the students felt uneasy about the unfamiliar format of the quiz, and we talked about how to approach the next one. In addition, we are working on mini-lessons during Intervention that focus on improving skills such as inference, summarization, and “searching for clues.” These skills will continue to appear on future quizzes so the more that the students work on them, the stronger their skills will become.

Welcome to Weiner's Weekly!

I am so excited to be back at Rutledge and working with the 5th grade students! After spending time with them last year as an aide in the building, it is fantastic to be back as a teacher and to be supporting them once again!
It was great speaking with you on the phone this week and I am so happy that I had the opportunity to introduce myself. As I discussed with many of you, the students are going to remain in their regular classroom for Reading each morning. I will be will them each day to support them during this period. After Reading, the students will come to my room for Intervention. During this time we will focus on the students’ fluency and comprehension skills, as well as extending their vocabulary.
