We continue to work on our curriculum and journey through American Stories in reading. The reading selections are excellent and rich in history. At the same time, they allow students to work on skills such as generalization, sequence of events, categorizing and classifying.

Hello Friends,
We have had a great couple of weeks here in Room 25. The students are still talking about the Shedd Field trip. We had such a wonderful time. The students spent their time observing aquarium life and identifying producers and consumers. I’d like to thank Mrs. D’Agostino a.k.a Isabella’s mom and Mrs. Ramos a.k.a. Bry’s mom for joining us on the trip.
We have completed our first reading theme, Journeys. We will begin theme 2, which is American stories. Although we will continue to work on skills from theme 1, theme 2 will focus on new skills such as, story generalization and text evaluation.
The students are putting their writing skills to good use by working on stories using words from their spelling units. In addition, they are in the process of writing some very interesting narratives based on a day they spent with a celebrity of their choice.

It’s hard to believe that the first quarter is ending on October 29. Report card distribution is on November 5. The first quarter, in large part, is mainly a review of skills while the second quarter introduces new concepts that will be reinforced throughout the year. Overall, I am pleased with the students’ progress but the challenges lie ahead due to the increasing difficulty of the curriculum.
Over the next couple weeks, there will be assessments in most academic areas. Students should arrive at school rested, well prepared and having completed all assignments.
In the meantime, continue to check homework for completion and sign the assignment notebook so students will be prepared for the following day.
Info and Reminders:
School is in session Monday, October 13, 2008.
The students will be taking an LA test on Monday.

The students have been hard at work this week. We have had so many fun things go on. We continue to dig deeper and deeper into our curriculum. In Reading we continue our journey. We have been reading and discussing many fascinating stories about families that migrated to the United States, as well as sharing stories about members of our own families that migrated to America. We also read a very interesting story about the Titanic.
In language Arts the students are learning about subjects and predicates. We are beginning to work on Narrative writing. The students will receive a recipe that includes all of the ingredients needed to “cook up” a great narrative story.

We have had another wonderful week. The students continue to work hard and learn tons. We begin each week by reviewing the Rutledge Code of Conduct. We also learn, practice and model appropriate behavior in specific areas. This week our class discussion focused on appropriate behavior on the school bus. The students are well aware of their expectations and I was pleased to hear all of the positive responses.
We are continuing on through theme one in our reading books. This week the students read Grandfather Journey, which is the story of a Japanese immigrant told by his grandson. Many of the students enjoyed this story and could relate to the characters love of two countries. The students worked on their sequencing skills. Using the story, they were easily able to identify the sequence of events.

Another busy week in Room 25! I’m happy to say that the routines of our classroom are becoming second nature to the students. Fourth grade is a year of many new responsibilities and lots of self-management. Together the children and I are working on self-help and problem solving skills, along with their organization of time (and desks). All of the students are working very hard on these skills, and they’ve really come together to help one another out. They are practicing the Rutledge Code of Conduct daily. I am happy to see responsible, respectful and safe behavior
We’ve continued to hammer away at our curriculum. We are onto our second journey in Reading and have begun guided reading groups.
The students are becoming more acclimated to their Spelling books and working very hard on both spelling and vocabulary.

If you were unable to attend please call me as soon as possible to sign up for an available conference time. In addition, I will be sending home information that includes a Walker/Biker Survey along with the Rutledge Code of Conducts. Please look over all of the information, sign and return both the survey and Code of Conduct sheets as soon as possible.
I’m looking forward to a great year!
