Thank you to all the families who made it to Room 42 for conferences. I know how busy our lives can get, and I really appreciate all of you making the trip here to talk about your wonderful children! It was a pleasure seeing all of you again. I look forward to speaking with you again in March at Portfolio Night!

It is hard to believe it, but we have just successfully completed our 1st quarter here at Rutledge Hall!! On Wednesday, November 5th, the students will be bringing home their first quarter report cards. Every student will have a brown envelope with multiple papers inside of it, including the report card. The students received grades in reading, language arts, science, and math. There will be no grade given for social studies.

As you know, this Friday is Halloween! This is always an exciting day for the students, but there are a few things that the children need to remember in order to have a successful October 31st! The students are encouraged to wear their costumes to school, however masks that cover their eyes and/or face are only allowed to be worn during the parade! Also, children are not allowed to wear any costumes that promote violence. Any guns, knives, or swords will be immediately taken away from the children. The students are also permitted to bring props that accompany their costumes, however they will not be able to access them until the parade as well. Students who choose to bring their costume to school instead of wearing it, will have the opportunity to change after lunch recess.

Dear Families,
What a way to end the week! We had a wonderful time at the Shedd Aquarium and the children were extremely well behaved. We saw all types of aquatic life and even went on a scavenger hunt inside of the museum. Ask your children about the wonderful sea creatures that they saw and the sharks, too.
I also wanted to take this opportunity to thank our chaperones for accompanying our class on our field trip. We are so grateful for your time and effort and the children loved having you with us! A big thank you to Mrs. LaRossa for the wonderful pictures that she took and bought for our class at the Shedd.
Check out this great photo of our class at the Shedd!

On Friday, October 17th, the fourth grade class will be heading to the Shedd Aquarium for our very first field trip this year! This field trip will be the culminating activity for the Ecosystems unit, which we have been studying in Science. We are all very excited about this adventure, however it is important that the children remember a few key elements.
1. All the students MUST wear their blue Room 42 shirts
(Miss Davis’s Diamonds).
2. Please pack a sack lunch for your child. The bag must be thrown away after lunch and please provide a drink for them as well.
3. Please DO NOT ALLOW YOUR CHILD TO BRING AN ADDITIONAL BAG TO SCHOOL. I want the children to go to the Shedd Aquarium with their coat and lunch ONLY!

We have had a wonderful start to 4th grade in room 42. Can you believe that we are already halfway through 1st quarter and into October? The time has really flown by! There are many exciting things that are happening in our classroom and in all of our subject areas. It has been wonderful watching your children learn about ecosystems, sentence structure, new vocabulary and more! The next adventure we are going to take as a class is writing book reports.

On Wednesday, October 8th we will be embarking on our 2nd annual “Walk to School Day”. This was a HUGE success last year, and we are looking forward to an even greater turn out this year! This event will take place at Prosel Park at approximately 7:45 a.m. The entire school will meet at the park and then we will all walk back to Rutledge Hall
together. The boys and girls will be returning to school by 8:30 a.m. I have already sent home a yellow permission slip with the children and many of you have turned it in. If you have not seen this letter, nor have signed it, I encourage you to do it as soon as possible. In addition, PARENTS ARE WELCOME, TOO! I would love to see Moms, Dads, brothers and sisters walking with their children to school!

Next week in District 74, we will be “Kicking off the year with a healthy start!” P.A.C.K. week is about making sure that our children are eating more fruits and vegetables every day of the week. Each day next week relates to a certain color, and the food that your child eats should match that color, too!
Here is the rundown for the week:
Monday-Purple Day (grapes, grape juice, blueberries or raisins)
Tuesday-White Day (white peaches, cauliflower, or bananas)
Wednesday- Red Day (apples, tomatoes or strawberries)
Thursday-Yellow/Orange day (apricots, carrots, or oranges)
Friday-Green Day (broccoli, green apples, or cucumbers)
Please encourage your child to participate in this wonderful activity throughout this week. Whether you child is a buyer or a bringer, make sure that they are including a healthy snack to give them the energy they need to make it through their day!

Another glorious week in the 4th grade has flown by and we are on our way to a very successful year! With out terrariums growing and our first lesson of spelling completed, we are definitely right back into the swing of things! The children are really excited about the aquariums that we are going to be building, too. We are expecting snails and other aquatic animals to arrive soon and are really looking forward to observing how these animals live and depend on one another. Ask your children about the fish that are living in our classrooms right now!
I wanted to remind you that t-shirt order forms, code of conduct sheets, and students handbook sheets need to be signed and turned into me as soon as possible. In addition, if you have not filled out the surveys that were given out on curriculum night, please do so at your earliest convenience. These will help me in meeting all the needs of your children.

Welcome to 4th grade!
I wanted to thank all of you for coming to curriculum night. It was very nice to see some familiar faces and some new ones, too! Fourth grade is definitely more challenging than third grade, however I already see excitement on your children’s faces as we dive into our curriculum and explore what 4th grade has to offer. I know this is going to be a great year!
I wanted to also remind you to please complete the two parent surveys. There is a Walking and Biking to School survey and a parent survey specifically for me. In addition, if you could please read through the Code of Conduct packet with your child, sign and date it, and have your child return that to school as well. It is vital that we reiterate how important it is to be respectful, responsible, and safe in and out of school.
