As Temps Drop...

in late November, walking down Crawford or East Prairie you may hear the voices of children laughing and communicating. You look over and what do you see Rutledge Hall 4th and 5th graders playing field hockey on a sunny cold late fall day with temperatures in the 30's.. Another unit to keep them active and let them know that just because its cold out, they dont have to hibernate for the winter. Emphasis in this unit is, as always, safety with the hockey sticks and stick handling skills. More importantly, proper clothing to wear so you can enjoy the outdoors year round. Gloves and hats are essential, but teaching the classes about layering. 1st a t-shirt, then sweatshirt, maybe a fleece jacket and then a windbreaker on top.

When the Leaves begin to change....

.....it's time for a little football. Boys and girls alike are involved in football right now and having a great time. Skills such as, throwing, catching, kicking, punting, and carrying the football are stressed. With 4th and 5th grades, rule application is emphasized learning about the "line of scrimmage", "punt formation", "first downs" and applying these during game situations. 3rd graders learn the same skills but put them to use in small group low organized game settings. All have been having a great time. There is nothing like playing a game of touch football on a beautiful fall day, with the leaves changing to reds and yellows, with the skies a bright blue.

Go out this weekend, grab a football and have your son or daughter throw you their best spiral!

5th Grade HoeDown Singin and Swingin

The annual Spring 5th Grade Hoedown was held last Friday and a wonderful time was had by all. 5th graders performed square dances with a high degree of difficulty, exibiting listening, cooperation and a great amount of rhythm. The gym was packed with 12 squares and many family members and teachers joined the festivities.
Next year we are looking forward to getting the guests to try out some of the dances with a high degree of difficulty, just to experience how complicated some of the patterns can be. Should be alot of fun!!

20th Annual 3rd Grade Hoedown Draws Huge Crowd

The 20th Annual 3rd grade holiday hoedown last Friday Dec. 14 had a fantastic turnout of family members and friends to partake in the festivities. Over 120 visitors and 150 students all dressed in western attire packed the Rutledge gym to take part in the fun annual event which the entire 3rd grade class shows there square dance moves. Teachers were asked to join the fun and really had a great time learning some difficult moves like the grand right and left and allamande, which always can be tricky for novices. the children were asked to do a bit of teaching and they came through with flying colors.

Many Activities Planned in Rutledge P.E.

As the seasons changed and the temperatures dropped, if you walked by the back fields between Todd and Rutledge, you may have seen 4th and 5th graders playing.......field hockey? Every November we are still out through Thanksgiving finishing up our field hockey unit , using floor hockey sticks and whiffle balls, and if we are lucky, we get to play in the snow. We dress appropriately, and have a blast as the temps get close to 30.

As Football and the Mile end....it's on to Field Hockey

As the 1st quarter ends, the 3rd ,4th and 5th graders all finished thier football units and mile run. 4th and 5th were required to run the mile as a test of natural endurance and all gave a great effort. Children learned the importance of pacing and the effects of endurance running on the entire body, with emphasis on heart rate. Football units ended with in class touch football tournaments. Luckily the weather held out and great time was had by all. 3rd grade classes focused on the fundamentals of throwing, catching, tagging and kicking which were then used in low organized games and relays.

Gettin Some Kicks

All Rutledge PE classes begin with warmups including stretching ,strengthening and endurance running. 4th and 5th grade classes have been running the quarter mile for warm-up around the beautiful District 74 back campus. We will work our way to the half-mile next week. 3rd grade will begin the quarter mile next week.

4th and 5th grade classes have been working on Soccer fundamentals and are moving into 5 on 5 soccer games, emphasis on rule application and game organization. Smaller games allow for maximum paricipation so all are fully involved. Tournaments have begun in all classes and are off to a great start. 3rd grade is working hard on fundamental and applying them in low organized game situations.

Each day as games are played we focus on fair and fun play, teamwork and giving your best effort.

As the autumn season comes closer and summer comes to a close, plan a nice long brisk walk with the family at Emily Oaks nature center or along the lakefont and enjoy the change of seasons.
