Music Room Notes-5th Grade

Welcome back to all of the 5th grade students and families.  We are going to have a very exciting year in music class.  We have started playing the guitar, and the students are doing a great job.  If you think you'd like to purchase a guitar, you can go to:

Different Strummer Music Store

(Old Town School of Folk Music)

4544 N. Lincoln Ave.

Chicago, IL

The guitars are priced at $79.00 just for Rutledge Hall Students.  That is for the "Oscar Schmidt" guitar that I have in my classroom.  There is also an "Old Town" guitar that is $59.00.  That guitar is also acceptable. Keep checking my blog for updates on how the students are progressing.  There will also be some audio samples of what we are doing in the classroom.

Welcome back to all of the 4th grade students.  It's so nice to see you.  I hope you had an opportunity to see  yourselves on TV!!!  Your concert from last year is still being played on the cable channel.  Make sure to tune in.  This year, we will continue with the ukulele, so if you think you would like to purchase one, you can still go to the:

5th Grade Music Notes 3-4-08

The 5th graders sound fantastic on the guitar!  They have a large bank of chords, and now we are trying our hand at composition.  You should hear your child trying their hand at composing if they have a guitar at home.

4th Grade Music 3-4-08

The 4th grade students are moving along nicely on the recorders.  There will be a concert on Thursday, April 17.  There will be two concerts-6:30 and 7:30, however we have not yet determined which classes will be performing at what times.  As soon as we know, I'll let you know.  In the meantime, make sure you hear your child practicing what he/she's learning at school!

They sound great!

Please feel free to call me at any time.

3rd Grade Music Notes-3-4-08

The 3rd grade concert is scheduled for next Wednesday, March 12 at the following times:

6:30-Plinke/McNeil/Quilici

7:30-Noonan/Kane/Uruba/Davis

You are in for a real treat!  They will all be singing and playing the ukuleles.  I see that many of you have purchased ukuleles.  That's great because we will use them also in 4th and 5th grades.

Students should arrive no more than 15 minutes before performance time.  They should report directly to their classrooms.  Please make sure that your child "dresses up" for the concert.  I've spoken to them about proper concert attire.  It is a special event, and they should dress accordingly.

We are very excited about the concert and can't wait to perform for you.

See you there!

3rd Grade Music Notes-1-25-08

The 3rd graders are doing such a great job on the ukuleles.  Many are bringing their new ukuleles to school for me to tune.  The reason I ask students to bring them to school for about a week, is that the strings stretch in the beginning, and go out of tune very quickly.  After tuning them for about a week, they begin to stay in tune.  Then, the students can bring them in once a week, or whenever they think it no longer sounds in tune.

I am also asking the 3rd graders to start bringing a music folder to class.  Now that they know so many chords, I will have some songs that I would like to give them and they will need to bring them back and forth to music class.

I'm very excited about the progress that they are making.

Please call with any questions.

Enjoy the weekend,
