Dear Families:

I hope many of you were able to attend Family Reading Night. It’s a great way to support our PTA and grow your personal library as well. Thank you to Britney and Antonia for purchasing books for our classroom library. I appreciate it! The Civil War is a great reference book as we learn about this time period, and I will use Elijah for our next read aloud book.

Computers: We have started to work on our podcasts from the Grove field trip! Each student chose between 10 and 12 photographs and is now responsible for writing a script for each of the photos. The script should include ALL of the words to be recorded and is to be completed at home. The kids have their script templates and are expected to be ready to record on the Wednesday after Thanksgiving Break. Mr. Werneske has been guiding us in this project and will be helping me to post them on my blog.

Dear Families:

As you know, we have our parent/teacher conferences scheduled for Monday and Wednesday of next week. I had every student write his/her scheduled time in the assignment notebook as a reminder. Each conference has a 20 minute block of time, so please be sure to be ready with any comments, questions, or concerns. If you prefer to email (spanoutsos@sd74.org) any questions ahead of time, so we may better utilize the 20 minutes, that would be fine.

Have a great weekend!

The Grove: Thank you to Antonia’s mom, Brandon’s mom, and Tommy’s dad for helping to chaperone our field trip to the Grove! We experienced some of the things that pioneers did, and even prepared our own lunch. The kids really enjoyed all of the activities!

Dear Families:

Your child signed up for an item to bring for our upcoming field trip to The Grove. We will be cooking our lunch, which inludes stew (vegetable and beef), fresh applesauce, and homemade butter. I will send a note home next week with the exact item your child is responsible for. For those kids making corn bread or cookies, they should be made at home on Monday night (October 6) and brought to school on Tuesday morning.

Have a good weekend!

The fifth grade curriculum includes a wide range of material. In Science, we have begun with Classification of Animals. Students will be expected to do an arthropod collection outside of school. Please encourage your child to begin collecting specimen as soon as possible. The completed project is due by Tuesday, September 23. Each student received a rubric showing the exact requirements of the project.

Students are expected to be reading daily. By requiring books from a specific genre, students will have the opportunity to read a wide variety of chapter books throughout the school year. Once the book has been read, the "Genre of the Month" sheet should be filled out, signed by the parent and turned in for credit.  This must be done by the last day of each month...NO EXCEPTIONS!
