Parent/Teacher Conferences
While I don’t really enjoy Curriculum Night as speaking to a room full of adults sitting in small chairs makes me a little nervous.  I do enjoy Parent/Teacher conferences.  Last week was no exception. It was great to meet with you on an individual basis to discuss your child’s progress.  For those of you that could not make our appointment I am available most school days from 3:00 to 3:30 if you’d like to reschedule.  Please call the office to make an appointment.

Yikes!
Mrs. Bayvas and her band of helpers put on a great Halloween party.  Not only was lunch provided but also the students were making things, reaching into bags of goo, dancing, playing games, and getting painted.  I got tired just watching them do their creepy things.  Thanks so much from the students and myself for putting on such a successful party.

Report Cards

Report cards were sent home with students this afternoon.  Please discuss the report card with your child and return the comment sheet and UNSEALED brown envelope.  We’ll recycle the envelopes for the remaining 3 report cards. You should also find a note reminding you of your scheduled Parent /Teacher conference time.  I’ll be sending home another note on Friday.  I look forward to meeting with you all to discuss your child’s progress.

Yearbook Orders
Tomorrow marks the last day to get an order in for Rutledge Hall Yearbooks.  The cost is $14.00 payable by check or cash.  Yearbooks are published towards the end of the school year.

Picture Retake Day
Monday, October 27 is Picture Retake Day.  If you were unsatisfied with the quality of your child’s picture you may return the packet and have the picture retaken.  Students that were absent will also have their pictures taken that day.

Spelling Tests
The students have done a great job matching the words with their definitions.  This week the test gets a little harder.  I will read the definitions and a “fill in the blank” sentence and students will correctly spell the words.  The students seemed pretty confident in their ability to do this so we’ll see how they do tomorrow.

Social Studies/Science

Nutrition Unit
The students did a great job on their Nutrition test.  Thanks to those that signed and returned their tests.  Nearly everybody completed and turned in the exercise log as well.  I’m impressed by the responsibility shown by students in coming to class with their homework and prepared to learn.  Keep up the good work!

Social Studies
We have started social studies this week with a look at maps and learning some key map skills.  Our social studies curriculum covers Illinois. Unit One covers how the land of Illinois was shaped by glaciers and some of the earliest people in Illinois. As we move through the unit students will be bringing home their textbooks and work sheets to be completed with your help.  Students will also be tacking notes in preparation for the tests.

Thanks
-    to the parents that helped out on the Botanic Gardens trip.

Testing Testing
The students have taken many tests this week to determine their reading skill levels.  They have performed like troopers with very few complaints.  The 3rd grade teachers will be meeting tomorrow to determine which students qualify for the many different types of help available.  Regular reading classes start Monday the 15th.

Spelling
Tomorrow will be the first spelling test.  Students will not have to spell the words for the first few tests but will be required to match the words with their definitions.  Today we highlighted the words and their definitions to help students study for the test.

Supplies
Several students still have not brought in all their supplies.  Please send in any remaining supplies as soon as possible.  Students should also return Internet permission sheets and behavior contracts.

Room 5 Student News

Welcome to Third Grade

What an exciting day we had meeting new friends in a new school. Although it's still early in the school year, I can already tell I have a great group of students! This week we'll be learning some new routines at Rutledge, checking in supplies and getting to know one another. Next Tursday, September 4th, I look forward to meeting you all at Curriculum Night. Mrs Weiss will be speaking to the parents as a group and then you'll be coming to Room 5 for a presentation by me.
